Beauty Courses Help Laura to Start New Business
Laura, 33, has studied with Skills & Learning since 2019. She always wanted to do something nail or beauty related, and when she saw our brochure arrive through her door, she decided it was time to do just that.
Her partner was ill and Laura was caring for him, as well as her child. Laura saw the Skills & Learning courses on offer and decided to apply to study Level 2 nails, starting in September 2019. The Level 2 Nail Technician course covers topics including manicure, pedicure, nail art, health and safety, and client care.
She also did a Gel Polish Techniques course, so by August 2020, she was Level 2 qualified to create stunning nails and designs. Laura also studied independently at another provider to learn about Polygel and Nail E-Files to add to her portfolio of skills.
Laura then made the decision to enrol on Level 3 Nail Technology to further her skills and learn more. Around this time, she was working as a Furniture Product Specialist at John Lewis, selling furniture to customers, liaising with suppliers and training colleagues. She decided to leave this role to focus on her study and start her business – Nails by Luna G.
Laura now rents a salon desk at Glamrock Hairdressing, in Northbourne, where she works 2 days a week and specialises in natural nail treatments and care. Using her skills of anatomy and physiology, she has many clients who have had a bad experience with artificial nails, bite their nails, or have other issues which require a focus on healthy nail regrowth. Laura helps clients regrow nails and have healthy, maintained nails and cuticles for long term benefits. She also creates stunning gel nail designs using colours and glitters in manicures and pedicures.

Being self-employed means Laura can apply her skills she learnt for income, and also work around her family and caring for her partner and child.
As well as starting her own business, Laura has enrolled on our Level 2 Beauty Specialist course. She is studying in Bournemouth and is learning about key beautician skills and techniques, such as facial, lash and eyebrow treatments to expand her service offering. She hopes to help clients feel great about themselves with more treatments and services to choose from.
Laura has already planned to study Level 3 Beauty too, to further her knowledge and support herself further.
Marisa, one of our beauty tutors at Skills & Learning, said: Laura has been here for a few years and has worked hard to gain her qualifications. Laura is keen, enthusiastic and always comes into college with a smile. She is very professional, organised and has excellent client care skills. Laura is the first to offer help to other learners in the group if they are struggling, she is a real team player. It has been an absolute pleasure to teach Laura and I know she will have a fantastic career in beauty.
Laura said – “I recommend Skills & Learning. The tutors have been really good, and there are no obstacles to learning; if you are on a low income, it’s funded, there is also help with childcare and travel, and there are so many courses which run alongside it as well. If anyone needs to do English and Maths or Bookkeeping or anything to start their business, it is there.”
We are so proud of Laura and want to congratulate her on all her learning so far, and wish her the best of luck with her business and further study!
