This five week course will introduce you to the basic elements of using pencil and ink to create unique pieces of art.

What the course is about

Explore using pencil and ink as a medium in a supportive and structured course.

During this course topics may include:

  • The basic materials
  • Mark making and pen control
  • Shading and composition

All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing and you will work using these elements throughout the course.

Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.

Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.

This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This is a Beginners course for those with no experience in the subject (or very basic knowledge) including some memory of the subject from school.

Materials and costs

Whilst some basic resources are provided for the first session, please bring with you any appropriate art materials/resources that you already own.  During the first session, your tutor may recommend additional materials/resources to bring for use during the remainder of the course.

Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner and you will not be eligible to a refund it its outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Qualification Levels: there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses will have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.

Parking at Centres: parking at centres may be limited, please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
