What the course is about

This course will give you a taster into what it means to be a counsellor and whether it is something that is right for you. You will learn the role of the counsellor and what it means to be a good listener. You will also learn what is involved with the Level 2 course and the importance of using a journal in order to show reflection.

There is no admission session required to join this course. 

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

There is no qualification or examination attached to this course. This course is strongly recommended if you are considering applying for Level 2 Counselling Skills. 

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

Your tutor will work with you to develop and review your progress throughout the course. This course is not appropriate for people with emotional distress.

Materials and costs

You will need a pen and paper plus a folder to keep your work in. f you are applying for an online course, you will need access to a laptop and access to Microsoft Teams. 

Next Step

You may wish to consider the CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills to further develop your knowledge and skills. Alternatively you may wish to consider Mental Health Awareness courses. Other courses may be offered by Skills & Learning or other local providers.

Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.

The total charge for this course is £50. Concessions FREE.

You could study this course for free if you:

  • Receive Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance or any other state benefit.
  • Are unemployed or under employed.
  • Receive take home pay (disregarding Universal Credit and other benefits) less than £494 a month (if you are a sole adult in your benefit claim) or £782 a month (if you have a joint benefit claim with your partner).
  • Earn less than £20,319pa.

If you’re not eligible, you can pay via an Instalment Plan or by paying the full course fee upfront.
