Digital Photography Beginners: Step 1

During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about the basics of using a DSLR digital (still) camera and enhancing and manipulating images on a PC. Topics that may be covered include:

• General photographic tips and good practice


• Understanding pixels


• Learning about composition, choice of viewpoint and selection of subject material


• How to control exposure, focus and flash


• Learn how to edit and retouch your photographs on your computer

All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course.

Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.

Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.

This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

There are no pre-course information sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course. Please ensure you have read and understood our STEPS guidance in order to accurately enrol upon the correct level course for you.

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course. There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

This is a Beginners Step 1 course, and so is suitable for those with no experience in the subject or very basic knowledge - including some memory of the subject from school.

You will need a notebook, pen and A4 folder. Please bring your DSLR digital camera (any necessary cables) and the instruction manual. Advice about appropriate other choices will be given during the first session. Camera phones are not suitable for this course.

Following the successful completion of this course, your next learning step is: Digital Photography Beginners: Step 2. Other courses at the next levels may be offered by Skills & Learning or other local providers.

Attendance: before enrolling you should ensure that you can attend all classes offered as far as possible.

Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
