This is an easy to follow course for those who would like to keep up with the ICT skills that children are familiar with and use on a regular basis.

What the course is about

The course will introduce you to computer and internet use and the terminology/jargon that goes with this.


Topics will include:

  • Saving and filing documents
  • Using word processing software
  • Using email
  • Internet safety
  • Parental controls
  • Social Media

Your tutor will also support you to improve your English and maths skills and plan learning activities related to your subject that are designed to develop your skills in these areas.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop and review your progress throughout the course.

There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This course is only for parents, grandparents and carers of children under 16.

It is for complete beginners so you do not need any previous experience in the subject but you will need to have a basic level of spoken English. It would also be useful for you to have access to a computer so that you can practise what you learn between each session.

You will need a notebook and a pen.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Qualification Levels: there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses will have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
