Food from Around the World: Easy Cooking Online for learners with learning difficulties andor disabilities
This course is specially designed for adults with learning disabilities and will develop your confidence in cooking independently and safely.
What the course is about
An easy to follow course for you to join at home and learn how to make fabulous food dishes from around the world. Your tutor will be cooking in their own kitchen and you will be able to cook along with them in your kitchen, by watching the lesson online and following instructions. To get you started on this online course we can arrange remote digital support, please let us know if you require this when you enrol.
You will need to consider the level of support you may need during the sessions as the course will have one tutor delivering the lesson online. This means that if you need one-to-one support, you will have to ensure that you have someone with you in your kitchen, so you get the help you need.
Topics that may be covered include:
- Food Hygiene
- Identifying food items and country of origin
- Understanding of food groups, such as proteins, fats and carbohydrates
- Tastes, textures and preferences
- Seasoning with herbs and spices
You will need to have an apron, a chopping board, a knife, saucepan, a casserole dish, a set of scales, an oven and hob or other means of cooking, access to a sink, measuring spoons.
Your ingredient list will be given to you each week at the end of the session. The required food items for the first session will be sent to you upon enrolment. You must not wear sandals, flip flops, or open toed shoes. Your hair must be tied back if it is longer than the bottom of your ears and you must have somewhere to wash your hands – separate to the kitchen sink. (A washing up bowl with warm soapy water is adequate.)
All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course.
Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community.
Learning takes place in a friendly online setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.
Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.
