This relaxing course will help improve your general health and fitness with gentle movement and stretching that you can do seated in a chair.

What the course is about

During this course you will receive both group and individual support from an experienced tutor who will provide guidance and advice as you explore gentle movement all whilst being seated in a chair.



Most classes begin with a breathing exercise, and you will then gently stretch the body with a sequence of exercises to warm up all the joints and muscles of the body.



You will:




  • Learn what your body needs and how it wants to move

  • Do what feels good and rest when you need to

  • Explore exercises that can improve your fitness

  • Take part in gentle movement and stretching exercises

  • Learn about warming/cooling your body properly to ensure you exercise safely



The classes will mainly involve staying seated and you may be invited to do a short standing practice with your chair for balance if needed. All exercises are invitational, and you will be encouraged to listen to your body and what it needs.

There are no pre-course information sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course.



Please ensure you have read and understood our STEPS guidance in order to accurately enrol upon the correct level course for you.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.



There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This course is for complete beginners, no previous experience is required but you will need a very basic level of fitness that allows you to work from a chair. This class does not require you to get down on the floor.

Materials and costs

You will need to wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. You might like to bring a cushion to put under your feet if you have shorter legs and a blanket for the relaxation towards the end of the class.



If you practice at home, you will need to have an upright chair - a kitchen or dining room type chair is ideal.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
