An exciting intermediate level course for those wishing to develop their language skills beyond simple phrases, conversations, and writing at beginner's level.

What the course is about

During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about the German language and culture. The course will help you progress towards understanding and using more complex structures, vocabulary, verbs, tenses and grammar, than the beginner's courses at Step 1, 2 and 3. Topics that may be covered include:




  • Descriptions (use of the imperfect tense)

  • German use around the world including key regional differences

  • Current affairs including the use of print and social media

  • Discussing film, television and cultural events in the formal and informal



All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work on these elements throughout the course. Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people. Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience. This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Pre-course information session or interview

There are no pre-course admission sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course. If you have the previous experience or knowledge described above, then this course is for you. Please ensure you have read and understood our STEPS guidance and completed the Online Modern Foreign Languages Initial Assessment in order to accurately enrol upon the correct level course for you.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop an Individual Learning Plan and review your progress against this throughout the length of the course. There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

You will have completed the beginners courses (or equivalent) and have a sound basic knowledge of the language including simple past, present and future tenses. You should be confident in speaking and conversing in the language during group activities.

Materials and costs

You will need a notebook and pen.

Next Step

After completing Intermediate - Step 1, you will have gained enough knowledge to enable you to continue learning at Intermediate - Step 2. Other courses at the next level may be offered by Skills & Learning or other local providers.

Attendance: before enrolling you should ensure that you can attend all classes offered as far as possible.

Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
