Gifted a Tablet or Smartphone? Not sure how to use? Need to know basic functions and the Jargon? This fantastic short course is designed for the older beginner and will focus on having a go at different ways to use your Tablet or Smartphone. Includes activities, meeting new people and having fun.

What the course is about

An informal and fun short course where you will have a go at using your device through a variety of activities with a Tutor available to support you. The focus is on having fun, exploring new techniques and just having a go.



Activities will be varied but may include:




  • Introduction to tablets and smartphones. The difference between a smart phone and tablet.

  • How to interact with and use a touch screen device. 

  • Charging, turning on/off, putting to sleep/waking and initial setup for the first time. 

  • Adding, removing, grouping icons into folders. 

  • Changing your ‘settings’ and dealing with notifications.

  • Using the camera to take pictures and movies and how to share them with friends and family. 10. How to use email on an Android tablet. 



How to use the World Wide Web on an Android tablet.



All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course.



Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.



Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.



This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Pre-course information session or interview

There are no Pre-course admission sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course.



Please ensure you have read and understood our STEPS guidance in order to accurately enrol upon the correct level course for you.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course. 



There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

 

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This is a Beginners' course that has been designed especially for those aged over 60 years - you will be expected to have no experience in the subject or very basic knowledge of the subject.





  1. What digital device do you have and how long have you had it? We are excepting learners to be relatively new to digital devices 




  2. Do you know how to connect your device to different wi-fi networks? If the answer is yes then this course if probably too basic for you, If the answer is no then this course will be just right. 




  3. Do you know how to record a video and send it to friends and family? If the answer is yes then this course if probably too basic for you, If the answer is no then this course will be just right. 



Materials and costs

You will need a notebook and pen.



You will be required to bring your smartphone or Tablet with you (with charging wire).

Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
