What the course is about

In your class you will:




  • Work on your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills

  • Complete classroom and homework activities to prepare you for a City & Guilds Skills for Life English for Speakers of Other Languages qualification

  • Once your tutor feels you are ready, you will take an assessment

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

This is a City & Guilds ESOL Skills for Life Entry Level 1, 2, 3 or Level 1.



You will take exams in:




  • Speaking and Listening

  • Reading and Writing



Your tutor will help you to decide when you have the skills to take a qualification. You and your tutor will agree goals for you to work on in class. Together you will look at these regularly.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This course is for you if:




  • You want to gain a qualification at Entry Level 1, 2, 3 and Level 1

  • You want to improve your speaking and listening, reading and writing skills for work and/or personal reasons

  • You can attend every class

  • You can complete any homework given



You do not need any previous experience or qualifications in English to attend this course. Learners who have attended this course said, I like my tutor and have made some good friends.



IMPORTANT - You will be expected to attend regularly from the first session and complete any homework given. If you do not attend you may be withdrawn from the course. 

Materials and costs

You will need an A4 folder, pen and paper. A bi-lingual dictionary would be useful. Course costs on application, depending on circumstances (residency/employment criteria apply). Attendance: before enrolling you should ensure that you can attend all classes offered as far as possible.

Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.

Fees and concessions

The total charge for this course is £462. Concessions FREE.

You could study this course for free if any of the following apply:

  • You receive Job Seekers Allowance (including National Insurance credits only), Employment and Support Allowance
  • You receive Universal Credit or other state benefits not included previously and your take home pay (disregarding Universal Credit and other benefits) is less than £892 a month (if you are a sole adult in your benefit claims) or £1,437 a month (if you have a joint benefit claim with your partner).
  • You are not in receipt of benefits, are unemployed, want to be employed and the course is directly relevant to your employment prospects.
  • If your income is below £25,000 p.a (gross including benefits)

If you’re not eligible, you can pay via an Instalment Plan or by paying the full course fee upfront.
