For learners wanting to improve their confidence with maths and work towards an Entry Level 3, Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills maths qualification.

What the course is about

In your class you will:

  • Revise the basics of Maths including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and using multiplication tables
  • Use metric measures - millimetres, centimetres, metres, grams, kilograms, millilitres and litres
  • Work on fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Develop data handling skills including averages, drawing graphs and charts
  • Work on problem solving skills
  • Complete classroom and homework activities to prepare you for your assessment

This is a course leading to a qualification.This course is paid for by public funding and you will be required to complete recognised Maths Assessments.

We will also, where appropriate, help you to improve other skills such as English, ICT and skills needed for employability.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

This is an accredited course.

You will work towards an exam or portfolio. Once completed your work will be marked and internally quality assured. If successful you will receive a nationally recognised certificate.

With your tutor you will agree goals for you to work on in class and this will be reviewed at regular intervals.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This course is for you if:

  • You want to develop and improve your skills and gain a qualification
  • You want to attend a small, friendly class and work at your own pace and level
  • You want to be more confident using Maths to do familiar tasks in a practical way
  • You can attend every week and complete home study tasks between sessions

You do not need any previous experience or qualifications in Maths to attend this course.

IMPORTANT - You will be expected to attend regularly from the first session and complete any homework given. If you do not attend you may be withdrawn from the course. 

Materials and costs

You will need an A4 folder, pen and paper, ruler and a calculator.

The course is Government funded so there is no cost for the course.

PLEASE NOTE - You will be charged an exam fee of £30 if you fail to turn up for an exam.

Next Step

When you have completed your Maths Functional Skills qualification you may be able to progress to a further qualification or an English or ICT course. When you have completed a Level 2 Maths Functional Skills qualification you may choose to do a GCSE in maths.

Attendance: before enrolling you should ensure that you can attend all classes offered as far as possible.

Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Qualification Levels: there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
