An introduction to the world of hairdressing and barbering.

What the course is about

With the other learners in your class, you will develop your practical skills and gain an insight into the hairdressing and barbering industry and how you should present a professional image in the salon.



This course will give you the opportunity to perform basic hair services while assisting others in the salon.



The topics you will work on are; 




  • Introduction to the hair sector

  • Presenting a professional image in a salon



 



You will then be able to develop skills in the following areas:



 




  • Shampoo and conditioning hair

  • Styling men's and women's hair

  • Colouring hair using temporary colour

  • Plaiting and twisting hair



A variety of learning activities will be used on this course, including tutor presentation and demonstration, practical application of skills, individual and group work, discussions, Q&A, internet research, individual research and project work.  Where relevant, your learning will enable you to develop skills and knowledge required for work. There may be vocational specialist guest speakers, or employers, invited to share their skills and experience.



 Regular home study will be necessary to successfully complete this course. You will be supported to develop good study skills.   



 Your tutor will also support you to improve your English and Maths skills alongside your learning of your vocational subject. 



 This is a course is subsidised by public funding. You will be required to complete all of the necessary coursework/assignments or exams by the given deadlines.



 Please note: if you do not successfully complete the course within this academic year, you will not be able to repeat it at the subsidised fee.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop and review your progress throughout the course.



There is no qualification attached to this course.



You will negotiate a Personal Learning Plan with your tutor identifying the areas you need to develop, which will be reviewed at regular intervals.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This course has been designed to prepare you for employment as a supervised assistant/apprentice or for further learning in the hairdressing and barbering industry.



Further qualifications at level 2 are required in order to qualify to work as a junior stylist in a hairdressing or barbering Salon.



No previous knowledge of hairdressing is required.



English language and maths skills at Level 1 are favourable. You may be asked to complete an online assessment in English (and maths if applicable) prior to submitting a course application or as part of an admission session.



There is an expectation that if you enrol on this course, you are willing to commit fully to the period of time involved in this course, the associated home study and the assessed work required - and intend to sit the examination if applicable. Materials and costs

You will need a pen and paper, plus a folder for your own work and any information given.  



You will need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and guidance will be provided at your first session by your tutor.  There is no requirement to buy a kit as all equipment will be provided.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Qualification Levels: there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
