This course is for learners who want to work in the nail industry providing gel polish treatments.

What the course is about

Successful completion of this course will enable Learners to gain the necessary practical and theoretical skills in order to provide Gel Nail Polish treatments to the general public and to gain employment in the Nail Industry. This qualification is designed to provide occupational competence at Level 2 and is made up of one mandatory unit:

Application of Light Cured Polish

This includes;

  • Preparing client and working area for the application, following health and safety working practices and Industry Code of Practice.

  • Performing consultation and client skin and nail analysis.

  • Identifying contraindications.

  • Selecting products, tools and equipment to suit the client’s treatment needs.

  • Following manufacturers’ instructions, providing suitable aftercare and maintenance advice and recording the results of the treatment.

A variety of learning activities will be used on this course, including tutor presentation and demonstration, practical application of skills, individual and group work, discussions, Q&A, internet research, individual research and project work. Where relevant, your learning will enable you to develop skills and knowledge required for work. There may be vocational specialist guest speakers, or employers, invited to share their skills and experience.

Regular home study will be necessary to successfully complete this course. You will be supported to develop good study skills.

Your tutor will also support you to improve your English and maths skills alongside your learning of your vocational subject. This will include assessing your current skills and planning learning activities related to your subject that are designed to develop your skills in these areas. To support this, you will undertake some e-learning modules, where appropriate, as homework.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

This is a Level 2 assessed course, to be awarded this qualification learners must successfully achieve the following assessments;

Portfolio of evidence containing; treatment evidence and assignment work.

The portfolio will be internally quality assured and will be required for external quality assurance by VTCT.

You will negotiate a Personal Learning Plan with your tutor identifying the areas you need to develop; this will be reviewed at regular intervals.

Please note that this qualification must be completed within the deadline set. 

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

We have designed this course to support you with working in the Beauty Therapy and/or Nails sector. Successful completion of this course will provide the skills and knowledge required for job roles as a nail technician.

There is an expectation that if you enrol on this course, you are willing to commit fully to the period of time involved in this course, the associated home study and the assessed work required, and intend to sit the examination.

English language skills at Level 1 are required. You may be asked to complete an online assessment in English prior to submitting a course application.

All materials required to complete the course will be supplied for you to use within the classroom.

Please wear suitable uniform, including tunic.

This course is a full cost course and not eligible for funding.

Next Step

There are opportunities for a Nail Technician to find employment in a variety of areas including beauty salons or nail bars, spas, cruise ships, hotels or resorts, or self employment (mobile or home based).

On completion of this course you may wish to consider the Level 2 Certificate in Nail Treatments, or if you have already completed this course the Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
