Model Making: Railways & Miniature Worlds
Whether your hobby is model railways or dolls houses, this great new course will help you go to the next level and design and build your own models and items to bring life to your miniature world with the help and support of a professional model maker and designer.
What the course is about
During this friendly and informal course you will receive both group and individual support in designing and creating amazing miniature models, accessories and scenery items to enhance your current personal projects or begin your journey into a new hobby.
Topics and skills include:
- How to design and bring your miniature world to life
- Basic model making techniques
- Choosing and applying applications and colour
- Understanding and correctly using size and scale
- Advice and assistance with your personal project
- Work alongside other modellers and share in the social side of the hobby.
All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course.
Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.
Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.
This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams
Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.
There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.
Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications
This is a beginner's course, and you will be expected to have no experience in the subject, or very basic knowledge of the subject including some memory of the subject from school.
Materials and costs
Basic materials and tools will be provided for you.
You may wish to purchase additional materials to enhance your ideas and designs. It is suggested that you discuss with your tutor before buying any expensive materials or equipment for this course.
You should not wear open-toed shoes in the classroom for your own safety. You may wear an apron to protect your clothing. Long hair must be tied back.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.
Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.
Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.
Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
