A career transition course for Jobcentre Plus customers who claiming disability or ill-health benefits.
What the course is about
A structured career transition course that focuses on understanding and overcoming barriers, improving confidence and moving forward.
This course:
- Develops a positive and resilient mindset
- Helps identify courses and training opportunities
- Explores the benefits of volunteering
- Supports the creation of CVs and positive health disclosure letters
- Provides information on Disability Confident employers
- Confidence building, through working in groups and using presentation skills
- Explores and myth busting the challenges/barriers experienced by jobseekers
Provides practical interview skills training (for voluntary or paid positions)
Information advice and guidance with regards to your next steps including an appointment with a career professional (if required)
This course supports you to make informed choices and identifies skills that you could develop. Independent home study may be required in order to prepare for interview.
This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.
Pre-course information session or interview
Learners need to be able to use a computer (Email, Word internet) and assess at Level 1 for English language (or provide evidence of already obtained this qualification or equivalent).

Assessment of progress, tests, exams
Your tutor will work with you to develop an Individual Learning Plan and review your progress against this throughout the length of the course.
Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications
This course is for jobcentre claimants who are receiving a disability or ill-health benefit.
You should have an interest in your own potential and aspirations. You will need to be prepared to take an active part in the sessions and to challenge some of your thoughts and beliefs.
This course may be of particular help to you if you are thinking of changing direction following long term unemployment, redundancy, have experienced issues arising from the COVID-19 Pandemic or other barriers.
You need to consider the type of information that you are prepared to share with others in the class.
Materials and costs
You will need a notebook and pen and a copy of your CV if you have one (electronic or paper).

English, maths and computing skills: all of our courses support the development of relevant English, maths and computing skills.

Attendance: before enrolling you should ensure that you can attend all classes offered as far as possible.
Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.
Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.
Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.
Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.
Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
