A career transition course for the over 50s with Level 2 distance learning course included.

What the course is about

A structured career transition course that focuses on understanding and overcoming barriers, transferable employability skills (including self-employment), understanding the local job market and completion of a relevant Level 2 distance qualification to boost your CV impact.

This course will include:

  • Confidence building, through working in groups and using presentation skills
  • Exploring and myth busting the challenges/barriers experienced by over 50s jobseekers
  • Identifying career opportunities (pathways) based on skills assessments
  • Exploring local labour market information/intelligence including “age diverse employers”
  • Exploring different job searching and networking techniques including Social Media/web resources
  • Completion of a tailored CV and covering letter- including when and how to disclose health conditions and the in-work support available
  • Practical interview skills training
  • Completion of relevant Level 2 accredited distance learning qualification
  • Visits from self-employment and recruitment specialists
  • Information advice and guidance with regards to your next steps including a National Careers Service appointment (if required)

This course supports you to make informed choices about what type of work is open to you and the skills required, supported by completion of a relevant Level 2 accredited course.

Independent home study is required in order to prepare for interview and complete your Level 2 qualification. Learners can choose from Level 2 Principles of Team Leading, Principles of Business Administration, Principles of Customer Service, Lean Organisation Management Techniques, Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care and more.

Pre-course information session or interview

Learners need to be able to use a computer (Email, Word internet) and assess at Level 1 for English language (or provide evidence of already obtained this qualification or equivalent).

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop an Individual Learning Plan and review your progress against this throughout the length of the course.

Learners will complete a Level 2 accredited distance learning qualification.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This course is for jobseekers and employees at risk of redundancy who are over 50 years old and seeking work or self-employment.

You should have an interest in your own potential and aspirations. You will need to be prepared to take an active part in the sessions and to challenge some of your thoughts and beliefs.

This course may be of particular help to you if you are thinking of changing your career direction following redundancy or have experienced issues arising from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

You need to consider the type of information that you are prepared to share with others in the class.

Materials and costs

You will need a notebook and pen and a copy of your CV if you have one (electronic or paper).

Places on courses: some of our courses will be in high demand and if you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from the taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner and you will not be eligible to a refund it its outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Qualification Levels: there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses will have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
