This great performing arts course is specially designed for adults with learning disabilities and will develop your creativity, increase your imagination, introduce you to performing techniques and build your confidence whilst having fun!

What the course is about

Throughout this 10-session course you will be guided through a range of performance skills through drama games, improvisation, movement and use of voice.



We will look at the different aspects of performance and acting and work towards an end of course group performance piece.



Each week we will approach a range of new skills within theatre looking at:




  • movement and space

  • character development

  • creating and working as an ensemble 

  • utilizing the voice



This will be a fun and active course and a great way to build confidence, develop social skills and improve health and wellbeing through group performance.



You should aim to wear comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear, as there will be weekly movement-based activities.



Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community.



Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.



Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.



This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Pre-course information session or interview

There are no pre-course admission sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course.



This course is specifically designed for adults who have a mild to moderate learning disability.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.



There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

 

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This course is specifically designed for adults who have a mild to moderate learning disability and may be particularly helpful to those who are working towards gaining independent living skills or when a qualification course is not the right option.



You will need to consider the level of support you may need during the sessions as the course will have one tutor and may have one learning support assistant. This means that one-to-one support may be limited to ensure that everyone gets the help they need. However, we do provide a limited number of spaces so that your carer or support worker can also attend the course with you, should you require. Please inform us when enrolling if you intend to bring your own support so we can accommodate them.



You do not need any previous experience in the subject but should have an interest in your own potential and what life has to offer. You will need to be prepared to take an active part in the sessions and to work in a group setting.

Materials and costs

Please bring a drink of water.



You will need to wear suitable, comfortable clothing to allow you to move freely. You are also required to wear sensible shoes e.g. trainers.



You will need a notebook, pen and A4 folder.

Attendance: before enrolling you should ensure that you can attend all classes offered as far as possible.

Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
