Philosophy for Beginners - Step 1
This course will help you develop your knowledge and understanding of Philosophy.
What the course is about
During this course you will explore the subject of Philosophy. This subject will support you to explore the way we think and how we question and discuss important ideas.
Topics that may be covered:
- Foundational thinkers in Philosophy: Socrates, Plato & Aristotle etc.
- Explore a range of subjects that may be of interest – this can be led by the interests of those attending.
The course will hopefully lead to a deeper understanding of the most important questions that have struck humanity over the last four thousand years, and potentially further training in philosophy.
All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work on these elements throughout the course.
Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.
This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams
Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.
There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.
Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications
This is a beginner's course and you will be expected to have no or a little experience in the subject. You will benefit from an open mind and a willingness to learn.
You will need to have a computer that has a working camera and microphone with internet access to enable you to join the online course which is delivered via Microsoft Teams. To get you started on this online course we can arrange remote digital support, please let us know if you require this when you enrol.

Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner and you will not be eligible to a refund it its outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.
Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.
Home study: you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.
Qualification Levels: there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses will have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.
Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.
Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
