This exciting course will help you to improve health, fitness, mental and physical balance, along with, improving overall well-being. You will learn self-defence in a friendly and supportive setting.

What the course is about

During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about self-defence techniques.

Self-defence is made up of a variety of practical elements of martial arts. These elements can be combined in any way for you to improve and develop your own style of self-defence. Contributions from Chinese martial arts, Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Thai Boxing and Boxing can be found within these sessions.

During this course an experienced tutor will guide and support you while you develop the art of Self-defence.

In a relaxed environment, this course can help you to improve your:

  • Fitness

  • Wellbeing

  • Physical and mental balance

  • Reflexes

  • Confidence

  • Technical ability

  • Discipline

The skills learned within these sessions will equip the learner to be able to practically defend or disperse violent situations, some of the techniques learned here are potentially dangerous, therefore it is always a last resort. These sessions will be taught in a way that is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.

This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Pre-course information session or interview

There are no pre-course admission sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course. 

Please ensure you have read and understood our STEPS guidance in order to accurately enrol upon the correct level course for you.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course. 

There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

Anyone is welcome to join and learn the skills in this subject, but you will need to be fit and well enough to take part in the activities.

Materials and costs

You will need to wear loose comfortable clothes with flat shoes, or any sports attire. Gloves are essential and hand wraps are advised.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Qualification Levels: there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
