This 5-week course guides you through using fat quarters to create a variety of fun and practical home crafts with your sewing machine, helping you build confidence, pick up new skills, and enjoy making beautiful handmade items each week. This course introduces learners to using a sewing machine while creating a range of small projects using fat quarter fabrics. You will learn essential sewing techniques such as measuring, cutting, stitching, and finishing, while making practical and creative items.

This course is perfect for beginners and hobby sewists who want to build confidence using their sewing machine while creating simple, stylish home crafts from fat quarters.

Materials and costs

You will need to bring your own sewing machine to the course, as working with your own equipment will help you understand how it operates and allow you to continue sewing confidently at home. Please make sure your machine is in safe, good working condition and remember to bring the user manual. 



You will also need a basic sewing kit and a pack of fat quarters, and your tutor will give guidance during the first session on what items are most suitable. Before purchasing any expensive materials or tools, please speak with your tutor for advice. As the course progresses, you will be expected to buy your own materials for the projects you choose to make.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
