Sewing Machine Skills: Step 3
This course will help you develop, maintain and improve your knowledge and skills in basic sewing machine skills.
What the course is about
During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about Sewing Machine Skills.
This fascinating course follows on from Step 2 (or equivalent) and will help you consolidate your learning at beginners' level.
During this course you complete a series of interesting projects which utilize the skills you have acquired in Step 1 and Step 2.
There is also time allowed for you to choose and complete your own project, with your tutor on hand to offer support and guidance where needed.
The classes are welcoming and informal, and a great way to meet like-minded people. The small class sizes, ensure individual attention.
You will have the option to adapt choices made to suit your ability and any opportunity you may have to carry out additional work on your project.
This course can help you to cut your costs and by recycling and renewing, make the most of your existing wardrobe and furnishings making a contribution to a greener environment and helping you financially.
All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course.
Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.
Practice at home is advisable to enhance your learning experience.
This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams
Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.
There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.
Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications
This is a Step 3 course, and you will be expected to have an increased basic knowledge and confidence in the subject and feel happy working more independently. During this course learners complete a series of interesting projects which utilise the skills acquired in Step 1 and Step 2. Please review the course information for these steps before enrolling.
Materials and costs
You will need to bring your own sewing machine as this will help you understand how it works and enable you to successfully continue sewing at home. Please ensure it is in safe, good working condition and bring your user manual.
You will need a basic sewing kit. Advice about appropriate choices will be given during the first session.
Before buying expensive materials and equipment please discuss their purchase with your tutor. You will be expected to purchase your own materials as the course progresses.
You will need to provide the materials for the project item that you choose to make.
You may find a notebook and pen useful.
During the first session your tutor may discuss additional materials to bring if possible.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.
Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
