This interesting course will develop your skills to communicate using British Sign Language (BSL) in everyday situations.

What the course is about

During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about Sign Language at the appropriate pace and level.

You will further develop skills in sentence structure and grammar used in BSL and increase your range of vocabulary.

Topics that may be covered include:

  • Describing people and animals
  • Rooms in the home and at work
  • Leisure activities
  • Food and drink

All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work on these elements throughout the course.

Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.

Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.

This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

There are no pre-course information sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course.

Please ensure you have read and understood our STEPS guidance in order to accurately enrol upon the correct level course for you.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.

There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This is a Beginners Step 3 course, and you will be expected to have an increased basic knowledge and confidence in the subject and feel happy working more independently. You should be keen to expand the breadth and depth of your skills.

You will need a notebook, pen and A4 folder.

Following the successful completion of this course you are encouraged to discuss with your teacher the possibility of developing a Sign Language Intermediate: Step 1 course.

Attendance: before enrolling you should ensure that you can attend all classes offered as far as possible

Places on courses: some of our courses will be in high demand and if you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from the taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner and you will not be eligible to a refund it its outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Qualification Levels: there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses will have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
