Living sustainably is becoming a major aspect of everyone’s lives and gardeners can play a big part in reducing their impact on Climate Change – find out how.

What the course is about

On this workshop you will learn the many ways that gardeners can take steps to adjust the way they garden to reduce their impact on the planet and positively support the delicate balance of eco-systems and wildlife, whilst still enjoying a beautiful and productive garden. 

 

You will:

  • Learn how to cut down on the use of plastic and avoid plastic pollution 
  • Choose the best alternative composts to peat 
  • Learn how to grow food in unusual ways to cut down on food miles 
  • Support wildlife and improve the habitat of beneficial insects 
  • Protect our most precious resource – water 

 All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course. 

 Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people. 

 Please note that the classroom (Education Centre) is situated approximately 300 yards from the car park. A parking fee will apply in the car park, but learners will be eligible for a 10% discount on refreshments in The Tea Rooms in the courtyard. 

 This course offers an avenue for creative pursuits, improving your health, confidence and wellbeing. This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Pre-course information session or interview

There are no Pre-course admission sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course. 


Please ensure you have read and understood our STEPS guidance in order to accurately enrol upon the correct level course for you.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

The workshop is structured in a way that gives you the opportunity to look at some different techniques enhanced with some tricks of the trade. 


Your tutor will work with you to develop your skills and review your progress at the end of the session.


There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This is a workshop, and anyone is welcome to join and learn basic skills in the subject.


Materials and costs

This is a one-off theory based workshop in the education centre. 


You will need to bring the following with you: 

A notebook and pen 

Your phone or tablet would enable you to take photographs of noteworthy features in the park 

Wear practical shoes and clothing for walking in the park

You should not wear open toed shoes in the classroom, for your own safety.

Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner and you will not be eligible to a refund it its outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.


Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.


Home study: you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.


Qualification Levels: there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses will have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.


Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.


Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.


Parking at Centres: parking at centres may be limited, please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
