This course will continue to look at a wide variety of textile design and techniques enhancing your understanding to give you a broad introduction to the subject.

What the course is about

During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about Textile Crafts and Embroidery Techniques.

This course will continue to give you a thorough introduction to working with?textile craft and embroidery techniques.

Topics that may be covered include:

  • Contemporary machine embroidery and further machine embroidery techniques, looking at the work of machine embroidery designers
  • Advanced hand embroidery and beading techniques
  • Producing 3D raised surfaces and texture in your work
  • Screen printing with multiple colours and some dyeing techniques


  • Developing a range of design ideas and?producing a sketchbook of ideas
  • Research into current trends for textiles, looking at how industry uses textiles and the work of some textile artists
  • Exploring the use of different fabrics in embroidery and how to combine multiple fabrics together
  • Considering the use of textile design in fashion ad interiors and designing a product for one of these areas
  • Looking at how embroidery is produced through workshops abroad

There will be an opportunity to apply your skills by planning a larger piece of work and develop ideas and samples that you want to use on the final piece.

This course can help you to cut your costs and by recycling and renewing, make the most of your existing wardrobe and furnishings, contributing to a greener environment and helping you financially.

All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course.

Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.

Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.

This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.

There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This is a Beginners Step 2 course, and you will be expected to have some basic knowledge and experience in the subject and can understand and complete simple tasks in the subject.

Materials and costs

You will need to bring your own sewing machine as this will help you understand how it works and enable you to successfully continue sewing at home. Please ensure it is in safe, good working condition and bring your user manual.

You will also need a basic sewing kit, embroidery hoop, embroidery threads, materials, base fabric, scissors and basic drawing materials, apron/rubber gloves, beading and other needles.

Advice about appropriate choices will be given during the first session, and your tutor may also discuss additional materials to bring if possible.

Before buying expensive materials and equipment please discuss their purchase with your tutor. You will be expected to purchase your own materials as the course progresses.

You will need a notebook, pen and A4 folder.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
