Textiles: Making Artworks

In this class, you will learn to use a variety of sewing techniques to make artworks of your choice. These could include making a wall hanging, pictures or 3D creations using different textile techniques.

The skills you will learn may include using a sewing machine, simple sewing stitches and quilting, attaching zips and making buttonholes. You can also learn dying and simple applique.

You will be able to use a range of materials but please bring your own sewing machine because there is only one available for common use. You should be very pleased with the results! You will also get plenty of ideas with which to continue with projects at home.

All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course.

Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.

This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

There are no Pre-course admission sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course.

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.

There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

This course is suitable for beginners and intermediate crafters.

Please bring any scraps of material or sewing equipment you already have and would like to use. Bring your sewing machine (including instruction manual) and old cotton garments to use in projects and buttons and zips if you would like to put them to use. Some materials and other resources will also be available. A limited number of sewing machines will be provided. A notebook and pencil may also be useful.

Other courses at the next levels may be offered by Skills & Learning or other local providers.

English, maths and computing skills: all of our courses support the development of relevant English, maths and computing skills.

Attendance: before enrolling you should ensure that you can attend all classes offered as far as possible.

Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
