Exam times can be a stressful experience so here are some dos and don’ts to help get you through the task! Remember to have a look at our toolbox here where you can find more tips and helpful information to help prepare you for exam season!
- DO prepare a revision timetable
Setting out what you are going to do for the day and planning you time will help improve your efficiency. You can do daily, weekly or monthly timetables, don’t forget to include all your subjects and don’t overfill it! It has been shown that revising in smaller blocks works best – for 20-30 minutes.
- DO exercise
At any time exercise is important but especially while revising! At the end of the day go and do 30 minutes exercise, this gets your blood circulating faster pumping more oxygen to the brain reducing stress and tiredness.
- DO reward yourself
Revising can be torture if you work non-stop, make yourself a plan for the end of the day to give yourself something to look forward to! Going out for dinner, seeing friends. Make sure this in proportion to the amount of work you’ve done, one hour’s revision is not equal to a days reward!
- Spice up your revision
Revision can become very dull after a while if you constantly study in the same ways. Add some colour, use the computer, present it to friends and family, if you are studying a book see if there is a movie adaptation to help you. All of these ways could help make revising a little less scary!
- DON’T procrastinate
When starting to revise make sure there are no distractions around you, turn off the TV, put away your phone and concentrate on what you are doing. Make sure you have a clean working environment and don’t get carried away doing something else!
- DON’T over do it
Getting carried away and drowning in revision is a very easy thing to do, but try not to. It is important not to miss out on sleep or skip eating and drinking as doing all of this can make you ill and stressed which will not benefit you. Make sure to take breaks, sleep and reward yourself!
- DON’T leave it till the last minute
Leaving revision until tomorrow is always an easy mistake to make! However by doing this you lose out on time to study all your subjects. You need time to make sure you have revised efficiently. Squeezing in as much revision as possible the night before an exam is not helpful, ideally the day before an exam should be re-reading notes.
- DON’T waste time making things look pretty
It is very easy to waste time making your notes or revision cards look pretty. While it is helpful to sometimes add colour and/or illustrations don’t waste all your time doing this.
