Computing and Essential Digital Skills

We offer a wide range of IT courses suitable for all levels.

Our courses are for beginners, those looking to build on their knowledge and qualification-based courses at all levels including the new Essential Digital Skills. We offer ICDL (International Computer Driving Licence), formerly ECDL, at both Level 2 and Level 3.

Also, new for this year, courses in Understanding Coding and the Principles of Cyber Security. Our courses are held in our centres in the BCP area and throughout Dorset during the week, at evenings and on Saturdays. Some, higher level courses, are delivered online. Some of these courses are not fully funded by Government and learners may have to pay a fee, Customer Services will be able to provide you with more information. 

     We offer:

    Refresh your Computer Skills

    A three-week classroom based course for learners who have little to no experience of using computers and wish to develop basic computing skills.

    Improve your Computer Skills (Entry Level 2 – Entry Level 3)

    A fourteen-week classroom based course for learners with little experience of using computers. This course will help you to develop skills such as; searching for information on the Internet, sending emails, word processing and file management.

    Essential Digital Skills Entry 3

    An opportunity to join a fully funded 12-week classroom-based course which will cover basic practical essential digital skills needed for life within these five areas:

    • Communicating
    • Handling information and content
    • Transacting
    • Problem Solving
    • Being safe and legal online
    Essential Digital Skills Level 1

    An opportunity to join a fully funded 12-week classroom-based course which will build upon practical essential digital skills needed for life and work within these five areas:

    • Communicating
    • Handling information and content
    • Transacting
    • Problem Solving
    • Being safe and legal online
    Enhance your Computer Skills (Certificate in IT User Skills Level 2)

    Further develop your IT skills in this 22 weeks course by creating a portfolio of knowledge. We have both class roomed based and online courses available. This course will cover topics such as:

    • Word Processing
    • Spreadsheets
    • Presenting and communicating information using IT
    • Improving productivity using IT
    ICDL Extra (Level 2)

    This qualification was the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) now renamed (2021) as ICDL (International Computer Driving Licence), there is no change to the course content or level of qualification. It is a nineteen-week course for learners who are more experienced at using a computer and who wish to gain a well-respected qualification. We have both class roomed based and online courses available The course covers the following four modules: 

    • Word Processing
    • Presentation Software
    • Spreadsheets
    • Improving Productivity using IT

    You will take an exam assesment at the end of each module.

    ICDL Advanced (Level 3)

    This qualification was the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) now renamed (2021) as ICDL (International Computer Driving Licence), there is no change to the course content or level of qualification. It is 38 week advanced course for learners who looking to build on their established skills. This course will be delivered online. The course covers the following five modules:

    • Word processing software
    • Spreadsheet software
    • Database software
    • Presentation software
    • Improving productivity using IT

    You will take an assessment at the end of each module. 

    If you are aged over 19 and do not yet have a Level 3 qualification, then you may be able to study this course for free. Please talk to us about your options.

    Principles in Understanding Cyber Security at Level 2

    This 25-week course will provide learners with sector awareness by introducing the knowledge and understanding in roles and issues relating to cyber security. It will also act as a steppingstone to studying cyber security at a higher level. This course is delivered online and assessment will be made by the completion of a portfolio. The course will cover the following six units:

    • Introduction to Cyber Security
    • Understand terminology used in Cyber Security
    • Understand legal and ethical aspects of Cyber Security
    • Understand common threats to Cyber Security
    • Understand methods of maintaining Cyber Security and working with others in Cyber Security. 
    Understanding Coding at Level 2

    This 35-week course will provide learners with a knowledge of coding. The qualification may also support progression into further study in coding or other topics within the digital sector. This course is delivered online and assessment will be made by the completion of a portfolio. The course will cover the following five units:

    • Understand The Principles of Coding
    • Understand Terminology Used in Coding
    • Understand Coding Design Principles
    • Understand the Processes and Practice of Coding
    • Understand the Importance of Communication and Project Management in Coding
