A Community of Courage and Celebration: ESOL Learners at the Bournemouth International Church
Last week we were honoured to be invited to an ESOL class at the Bournemouth International Church — one of the valued venues where Skills & Learning deliver its classes — and then to join the joyful Lunar New Year Celebration.
But this story really began four years ago, when a simple yet powerful idea took shape. A passionate volunteer from a local Hong Kong community group approached Skills & Learning with a vision to create ESOL classes to support British National (Overseas) visa holders as they settled into life in the UK.
Today, that vision has grown into a thriving, intergenerational community.
A variety of learners – from young adults through to later life – come together every week to build their English skills, confidence and friendships. Parents, children — and even grandparents — have all been part of the journey, creating a space that feels far more like family than a classroom.
A huge part of this success is down to our dedicated ESOL tutors, Eric, Hazelin, Tatiana, Sarah and Deanne, whose commitment, patience and encouragement have helped shape not just confident English speakers, but a strong and supportive community.
When we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles, red decorations and a generous round of applause — a beautiful reflection of the gratitude, resilience and positivity that define this community.
This is what adult education is truly about:
✔ Growing in confidence
✔ Creating a sense of belonging
✔ Learning and celebrating together
At Skills & Learning, we are incredibly proud to support this inspiring community — and to see how learning can bring people together, strengthen confidence and create lasting connections.
If you or someone you know is looking for ESOL classes in Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole or wider Dorset, we warmly invite you to get in touch. Because sometimes, learning English is just the beginning — and community is what truly changes lives.
