From Passion to Profession: Sophie's Journey with Digital Photography
When Sophie first came across a leaflet advertising the Digital Photography Beginners: Step 1 & Step 2 course with Skills and Learning, she had no idea how much it would change her life. Now, as the proud owner of By Sophie Photography, she reflects on her journey into the world of photography, from a creative hobby to a thriving business.
Finding a Creative Outlet
Sophie, a mother of two and a pet lover, had always enjoyed capturing moments of her children and her two cats. However, she wanted to take her photography skills to the next level. Not keen on returning to a long-term academic setting, she saw our photography course as a perfect fit for her busy lifestyle.
“I wanted something I could go to over a short period of time. It suited my lifestyle perfectly.”
Gaining Skills and Confidence
Under the guidance of her course leader, Angela de Groot, Sophie quickly moved from shooting in automatic mode to mastering manual settings. Learning about the exposure triangle was a pivotal moment for her, transforming the way she approached photography.
“Angela was absolutely amazing. I never thought I’d be able to use manual mode, but this course changed everything for me.”
The supportive and interactive learning environment played a significant role in Sophie’s growth. Regular feedback sessions and the ability to ask questions whenever needed made the experience even more valuable.
The Skills and Learning Adult Community Education photography courses focus on practical application, ensuring students get hands-on experience with their cameras. Course instructors, like Angela, bring years of industry knowledge and expertise, creating a dynamic and engaging learning experience.
From Learner to Business Owner
After completing the course, Sophie took the leap into professional photography. She started by showcasing her work on Instagram, which quickly gained traction. Encouraged by friends, family, and followers, she launched her own website and gradually built a business.
“The biggest challenge was getting my website up and running, but once it launched, everything started to fall into place.”
Initially, Sophie explored different types of photography, including landscapes and family portraits. However, she soon discovered her passion for pet photography, a niche that combines her love for animals with her creative skills.
“I don’t feel like I’m working when I’m photographing pets. It’s truly something I love doing.”
The Impact of the Course
Sophie credits the Skills and Learning Adult Community Education photography course for giving her the confidence and technical skills needed to turn her passion into a profession. Positive client feedback and glowing Google reviews have further reinforced her self-belief.
“Angela gave me the skills to produce work that people are happy to pay for. That, in itself, is incredible.”
By learning to properly use lighting, composition, and camera settings, students from Skills and Learning Adult Community Education are well-equipped to pursue photography as a passion or profession.
Looking Ahead
Sophie continues to expand her photography business and explore exciting projects, including charity work for Margaret Green Animal Rescue and capturing mud run events for dogs and their owners. She is also considering further training in Photoshop and Lightroom to refine her editing skills.
With passion, persistence, and the right training, Sophie has turned her love for photography into a fulfilling career—one that she hopes will continue to grow and evolve.
