We offer a  short introductory photography course called Explore Photography Using a Phone or Camera.



Learners should take this course first.



This more detailed Digital Photography course is the next step.



Join our Digital Photography – Gateway Level 1 Award in Progression, a beginner-friendly course designed to help you develop practical skills in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Pre-course information session or interview

Usually learners taking this course have done our short introductory course called Explore Photography Using a Phone or Camera.



However, this is not essential and learners can start with this course if they already have some basic camera skills.



We don't interview learners for this course and so rely on learners assessing their own level and choosing the most appropriate course to start on.

Learners do not require formal qualifications in photography to take this course and the key requirement is simply enthusiasm.

Materials and costs

You will need a smartphone or digital camera and a cable for connecting it to a computer. You may require additional materials such as photographic paper to print on etc. depending on the route you choose to pursue.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.

The total charge for this course is £140. Concessions FREE.

You could study this course for free if any of the following apply:

  • You receive Job Seekers Allowance (including National Insurance credits only), Employment and Support Allowance
  • You receive Universal Credit or other state benefits not included previously and your take home pay (disregarding Universal Credit and other benefits) is less than £892 a month (if you are a sole adult in your benefit claims) or £1,437 a month (if you have a joint benefit claim with your partner).
  • You are not in receipt of benefits, are unemployed, want to be employed and the course is directly relevant to your employment prospects.
  • If your income is below £25,000 p.a (gross including benefits)
