The course will cover (1) Using devices and handling information (2) Creating and editing (3) Communicating (4) Transacting e.g. buying things on line and completing forms online (5) Being safe and responsible online.



Details of this course: 



1 - Using devices and handling information 





  • Know differences between desktop, laptop and smart devices 




  • Know about e-mail, word-processing, presenting 




  • Change settings like display, sound, Wi-Fi, time, language, accessibility 




  • Files – create, open, edit and save  





2 – Creating and editing 





  • Create and format text e.g. bold, underline, italics, font sizes,  text alignment, bulleted lists 




  • Edit and format pictures 




  • Capture images and video 





3 Communicating 





  • Send e-mails 




  • Make video calls 




  • Understand how you create a digital footprint 





4 Transacting 





  • Fill in an online form 




  • Buy something online 





5 Being safe and responsible online 





  • Know how to use two factor authentication when logging in 




  • Understand security software 



Pre-course information session or interview

There are no entry requirements for this course other than an enthusiasm for learning about the digital and computing world.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

The course will have an externally set and marked onscreen / online assessment which will be available on demand. The assessments will be pass / fail in line with the other Functional Skills qualifications.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This an entry level course suitable for those with limited experience of digital devices.

  1. Have you done a previous course with Skills and Learning? Learners may well have completed our IT for Beginners course. 







  1. Do you have any previous experience of using computers? Learners suited to this course may have some experience of using computers but are unlikely to have used them at work on a regular basis. 







  1. Do you have your own device? Learners are likely to have a digital device such as a phone or tablet; they may or may not have a laptop or PC. 







  1. Do you have your own e-mail account? Learners already with an e-mail account might be beyond this IT Beginners course and may be suitable for this one or the higher Level 1 course. 







  1. Do you bank online? Learners with this level of competence should probably be directed to the Level 1 course. 



Materials and costs

The course will be taught in an IT classroom but learners can bring their own devices to work on if they wish.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.

  • You receive Universal Credit or other state benefits not included previously and your take home pay (disregarding Universal Credit and other benefits) is less than £892 a month (if you are a sole adult in your benefit claims) or £1,437 a month (if you have a joint benefit claim with your partner).
  • You are not in receipt of benefits, are unemployed, want to be employed and the course is directly relevant to your employment prospects.
  • If your income is below £25,000 p.a (gross including benefits)
